Good News: The SAAHIP 2027 Conference abstract deadline has been extended to 13 November 2026.
SAAHIP Conference Committee Extends Abstract Deadline to 13 November 2026

Good news for everyone who has been meaning to send in an abstract: you have a little more time. Following multiple requests from SAAHIP members, the abstract submission deadline for the SAAHIP 2027 Conference has been extended to Friday, 13 November 2026, at 23:59.
We know how hospital pharmacy works. The dispensary doesn’t pause for deadlines, stock-outs don’t wait for weekends, and the project you’re proudest of is often the one you haven’t had a moment to write up. This extension is for you.
Your work deserves an audience
The response so far has been encouraging, with abstracts arriving from across the country through our new online portal. But we know there is much more good work out there, and we want to see it.
You don’t need a large research grant or a team of statisticians to submit. Some of the most valuable presentations come from everyday practice.
Research, quality improvement projects, real-world problems you have solved, and practical innovations are all welcome. The categories and presentation formats are set out below.
If it changed how your pharmacy works, or how your patients are cared for, it belongs at this conference.
Key dates
| What | When |
| Abstract submissions close | Friday, 13 November 2026, 23:59 |

What happens at each stage
Until 13 November, 23:59: submissions are open. Submit your abstract through the portal. The body of the abstract may not exceed 350 words, excluding the title, authors and affiliations. Please avoid tables, graphs and images. Abstracts that don’t follow the submission guidelines won’t be considered, so check yours against the guidelines before you submit.
14–30 November: review. The Scientific Committee reviews every abstract. Accepted abstracts are assigned to the most suitable session: podium, poster, scenario or quality improvement, pearl, or workshop.
1 December: outcome. Every corresponding author receives an email with the outcome. If your abstract is accepted and you want to present it, return the signed acceptance document and pay the conference registration fee. Presenters don’t receive an honorarium, and travel and accommodation costs aren’t covered.
11–14 March 2027: the conference. Accepted authors present their work to colleagues from across the country.
Categories for submission
When you submit, choose the topic that best fits your work:
- Access to medicines: supply chain resilience, medicine availability, logistics and procurement, and equitable access in institutional settings.
- Digital health solutions: technologies such as tele-pharmacy, mobile apps and electronic health records that improve pharmacy practice.
- Evidence-based practice: putting clinical guidelines and best practice into action, real-world evidence, health outcomes research, and economic evaluations of pharmaceutical care.
- Legislative readiness: strategies for navigating current and future legislation, regulation and policy in South Africa.
- Patient-centred care: managing and preventing communicable and non-communicable diseases, for example through personalised pharmacotherapy, pharmacogenomics, vaccines, adherence and patient counselling.
- Sustainable resource management: thriving in high-demand services facing resource constraints and staff shortages.
- Other: any other topic of interest to hospital and institutional pharmacy in South Africa.
Presentation categories
You also choose how you would like to present. Each category has its own abstract structure.
| Presentation category | Format | Abstract headings |
| Podium | 10-minute oral presentation plus 2–3 minutes of questions; usually a structured research project | Background, Objective/s, Methods, Results, Conclusion |
| Poster | Visual summary of research, a case study or a real-world event; a 2–3 minute talk in the poster session, then discussion with delegates at your poster during breaks | Background, Objective/s, Methods, Results, Conclusion |
| Scenario or quality improvement podium | 10-minute oral presentation plus 2–3 minutes of questions on a real problem you met and solved in practice: why it happened, the concerns it raised and how it was fixed | Background, Purpose, Approach used, Outcome, Lessons learnt |
| Pearl | 5-minute talk with a fresh slant on a serious topic and one punchy, little-known message; only the title appears in the programme, and there are no questions | Background/Motivation, Lessons to learn, Key message/s |
| Workshop, symposium or seminar | Interactive session on challenges, innovations, evidence or policy, focused on practical implications for practice, patient care and health systems | Background and rationale, Objectives, Contents and approach, Target audience, Expected outcomes |
Awards will be presented for the best podium, poster and scenario presentations by practising hospital or institutional pharmacists, the best presentation by an academic pharmacist, and the best pearl. Only paid-up SAAHIP members qualify. Winners from the previous two conferences and members of the judging panel are not eligible.
How to submit
Submissions are made through the abstract portal on the SAAHIP website: [link]. Create an account, follow the guided steps, and save your progress so you can return to it before you submit. Please read the submission guidelines on the portal before you start.
Help us spread the word
Think of the colleague who quietly fixed a problem everyone else had learned to live with. Think of the intern with a project worth sharing, or the pharmacist assistant whose idea saved hours every week. Forward this post to them, share it in your WhatsApp groups, and encourage them to submit.
We look forward to reading your abstracts and to seeing you in March.
